If you read The Times then you will have seen today’s raconteur supplement on Cosmetic Dentistry.

Many of the articles inform the reader of facts about dentistry that we have been telling our clients for a long time.

One article particularly caught my eye as some of the statistics are shocking to read as a dental care professional.

Research has shown that people who have great smiles are thought to be more intelligent, better educated and more successful. Based on this it is no surprise that according to the Academy of Cosmetic Dentists a third of the population is concerned about the appearance of their teeth and having a whiter, brighter smile is very high on the wish list.

These statistics explain the increased demand for cheap home whitening procedures available over the counter or on the internet.

Enticing marketing messages promise amazingly white teeth for a fraction of the cost of a professional home whitening treatment supervised by a dentist but what people don’t seem to know are the associated risks and pitfalls of these cheap DIY whitening kits.

The article described such kits as largely ineffective and the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has even issued warnings about dangerous levels of whitening agents used in take-home kits.

The use of whitening agents is strictly regulated for UK dentists to make sure that whitening agents do not exceed safe levels. Trading Standards have published test results showing that 18 out of 20 DIY kits contained illegal levels of whitening agents putting clients at risk of damaging their teeth permanently.

In addition when opting for tooth whitening with a dentist any underlying oral health issued will be addressed and treated to ensure optimal overall oral health which will safeguard any investment in cosmetic dentistry.

All in all its is safe to say if something seems too good to be true it probably is!!!

In contrast to the usual Vogue cover models this month the fashion magazine chose a picture of the smiling supermodel Arizona Muse.

According to an article published on Mail Online on 5 Feb 2012, Alexandra Shulman editor of Vogue thinks smiling is good for us!

Did you know that smiling boosts the immune system, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, releases the feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine and enhances other people’s perceptions of you?

Anna Winters,  who has been part of the Illume team since she joined us as a trainee dental nurse in 2010 has recently completed her dental nursing training course and successfully passed her dental nursing exam.

We are very proud of her and wish her best of luck and lots of joy in her chosen career as a qualified dental nurse!

It takes two years to qualify as a dental nurse after gaining two years of full-time chair-side experience as well as attending a part-time vocational course for one year and passing an exam.

As part of the training course Anna had to study anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, dental disease and learn about composition and use of dental materials, drugs and anaesthetics  as well as infection control, sterilization and much more.

In November 2011 Anna took her dental nursing exam with the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses comprising of a written and practical exam testing her on her overall knowledge and practical skills.

After qualifying as a dental nurse Anna will now register with the General Dental Council as a Dental Care Professional like all our other clinical team members.

Illume held another Open Evening to celebrate the completion of the recent practice refurbishment. We are immensely proud of the new look practice and were able to showcase all the benefits this has delivered.

Guests were able to discuss with a glass of wine and nibbles how they may benefit from the many treatments that we offer. They also had a go in our ‘Guess the Illume team as babies’ competition with monies raised matched by Illume and sent to the Pied Piper Appeal. It’s fair to say that the results weren’t brilliant with many of us bemused at whom we’d been mistaken for!

Congratulations to Mrs Frances Smith and Mrs Jackie Macey who won a case of wine and an electric toothbrush.

Although happy to chat about any aspect of what we do here at Illume there were specific treatments we focused on during the evening.

Dr Adrian Jones and our Implant Co-ordinator Claire were available to discuss the use of implants to restore missing teeth helping clients to avoid unsightly gaps and dentures and to be able to eat whatever they like with confidence.
