Teeth whitening can make a massive difference to a client’s smile, as well as helping boost their confidence.
In recent years teeth whitening has become more popular and here at Illume in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. We’ve seen a rise in the number of clients wanting such cosmetic dental work.
Professional tooth whitening can make all the difference to your teeth. It can help remove stains and pigmentation, helping create brighter and whiter teeth.
“Worryingly, as a result of the popularity in teeth whitening, a large number of unprofessional and unregulated individuals and companies started offering such treatments, often with detrimental effects on clients,” said Tim Rumney, clinical director and dentist at Illume.
“Such was the number of incidents reported, government regulation was put in place, and tooth whitening has now been protected by law, making it illegal for anyone except a dentist to prescribe it.”
Indeed, the British Dental Association states: “Patients are often confused about who can do teeth whitening, but the legal guidance is clear: only registered dentists may carry out teeth whitening in the UK.”
So how can you ensure you’ll end up with a gleaming smile after having your teeth whitened?
“It’s quite straightforward. We ask any client considering having their teeth whitened to first come into our practice at Queen’s Road to undertake a professional consultation,” said Tim.
“It’s at this point where we can discuss what results a patient is hoping for and what can be achieved. When having teeth whitened, there are many factors to take into consideration.
“Clients have to be dentally fit before they begin whitening and may require treatment before whitening can begin. Clients need to be aware they may require new fillings or crowns replacing existing ones which may no longer match the newly whitened teeth.
“We take photos before we begin so we can compare before and after when the treatment is complete. We then take an impression of the client’s teeth for the laboratory to produce a custom-made whitening tray. This is like a thin gumshield and acts as a carrier to apply the whitening gel to the tooth surfaces.
“Our professional dental team will advise on how to load and wear the tray, typically overnight.
“From initial consultation through to the final treatment, we’ll be monitor progress to ensure everything goes smoothly and apart from a little temporary sensitivity, there are few side effects.”
